EternaLEnVy Reveals The Key Behind The Katowice Dark Rift Play

Fnatic’s backdoor versus Team Secret was a standout moment in the tournament

So Jacky EternaLEnVy Mao did another AMA on Reddit. He’s done enough of these that even he doesn’t remember how many he’s done (this is his 4th, for the record). This time, thankfully, there are a lot less pandering anime questions, and more questions about Fnatic’s recent matches in ESL One Katowice.

In particular, EE answered something we at Mineski.net have been wondering ourselves: what was the thinking behind the out-of-nowhere Dark Rift play in game 3?

Was that another fEEd, or was it some next-level 200 IQ bait by EE, making sure that Team Secret spends their echo slam and other cooldowns on him. Like EE’s infamous deliberate time-buying Ember Spirit suicide in the Nanyang Championships, you can never take an EE play at face-value, right?

From the AMA:

Here’s the tl;dr version of how to make a split-second decision at the highest level of competitive play:

  1. Get stunned and be sad.
  2. Notice a backdoor opening to win and get excited.
  3. See Boots of Travel on cooldown and be really sad.
  4. Yo, Universe can Rift.
  5. Win. Yay.

Sometimes that’s all it takes. It’s a bit of a far cry from EE’s usual twenty-thoughts-a-minute brain blasts but regardless, Fnatic won and it was a damn good call.

The EE thought-process, from his interview with Monster Gaming.

EE also talks about his opinions on the Dota Pro Circuit, getting constantly blamed, and a small shoutout to Execration and GeekFam, among other things in the thread. You can catch the rest of the AMA here: AMA EternaLEnVy
