The games so far are Dota 2, Starcraft 2, Tekken 7, Mobile Legends: Bang Bang, and Arena of Valor.
An updated list of the esports titles that will be featured at the 2019 Southeast Asian Games has been announced by the Philippine SEA Games Organizing Committee (PHISGOC) and Razer, the event’s official esports partner.
Valve’s Dota 2, Blizzard’s Starcraft 2, Moonton’s Mobile Legends: Bang Bang, Tencent’s Arena of Valor, Bandai Namco’s Tekken 7, and one more unannounced game title for the console platform were revealed to be the medaled esports events at the 30th SEA Games.
“We are working with all involved publishers and partners to lock down the titles within the next few weeks, and look forward to watching the region’s best esports athletes face off in the arena next year,” Ramon Suzara, Executive Director of PHISGOC, stated.
Last month, esports achieved yet another milestone when it was officially enlisted as a medal sport for the eleven-country, international multi-sport event. The announcement was made with Razer, a global lifestyle brand for gamers and an official partner for the SEA Games 2019.
“In the three weeks since we announced esports as a medal event at SEA Games 2019, we’ve seen a phenomenal level of interest from all segments of the industry, most of all game publishers. The shortlisting of six games in such a short time is evidence that the notion of esports as a legitimate sporting event is no longer a fad. We look forward to having more partners come on board and join us in defining a new generation of sporting heroes for the youth and millennials,” Min-Liang Tan, Razer co-founder, and CEO, said.
A Razer delegation led by Min-Liang Tan worked with PHISGOC and the Philippine Olympic Committee (POC) for the realization of esports as a medal event at the biennial regional multi-sport event. Razer was also behind the facilitating of discussions between PHISGOC and various game publishers for the shortlisting of esports titles that will be featured at the SEA Games 2019.
“The Sports Department of PHISGOC has long been keen on including sports that will appeal to the young, tech-savvy spectators, including esports,” Abraham Tolentino, Director for Sports of Philippine SEA Games Organizing Committee shared.
Sebastian Lau, Director-General of Asian E-Sports Federation (AESF) lauded PHISGOC’s effort in including esports as a part of their Sports Program. He also recognized how the continuously growing industry is the ‘sport of the future’.
The SEA Games 2019 will be hosted by the Philippines from November 30 to December 11, 2019. The venue for the esports event is still under evaluation.
