In the first day of the 2018 League of Legends World Championship, Team Liquid, the best hope of North America, was slated to go up against KT Rolster in the first game of day to open up the group stages. TL slipped up early in the game, yielding control to KT but they were able to bounce back in a strong way to get an early 2-0 skill. That would be the end of TL’s struggles as they were promptly shut down by KT mostly due to their own hesitation.
This disappointing first game of the day was contrasted by an amazing western performance in the final match of the day. The third seed of EU, Team Vitality, went up against the defending world champions Gen.G. Where Team Liquid failed to put a strong foot forward in the opening day of the Worlds 2018 main event, Team Vitality managed to pull off a near-miraculous victory that has shaken the foundation of the grandest international League of Legends tournament.
Full of Life
VIT opened up their game in a similar manner with Team Liquid’s, they lost a three players at only six minutes into the game, tilting the game heavily in Gen.G’s favor. However, the third seed from Europe didn’t slink back after dropping down to 0-3, they went aggressive in the mid lane to catch Crown in a 4-man collapse, in an attempt to turn the tides of the game. They would eventually lose two more people for the price of one mid laner, but they were starting to become proactive in this seemingly impossible game against one of the clear frontrunners in the tournament.
Gen.G continued the match going back and forth against Vitality. The game soon cut close as EU’s third seed inched their way with every hard-fought pick off and team fight win they could manage. It was by no means a clean game from any of the two teams but it was abundantly clear that Team Vitality had a plan revolving around their mid lane Ekko pick, and they were willing to stick with it even if it meant defeat.
It’s 43 minutes into a grueling game and Gen.G are up four kills but are behind over 6000 gold and four turrets. Team Vitality bait a fight in the dragon pit at a 5v4 disadvantage while their mid lane Ekko pushes alone into the enemy base. The defending world champions are put into a mad dash towards their home to defend the game as VIT’s carry Kai’sa teleport’s in to assist in the base demolition.
Gen.G were completely outplayed in the final moments of the game where they were left playing to Vitality’s tune. Team Vitality walk away with an impressive win against one of the top teams in the tournament. This victory has turned this tournament upside down as no team is safe. EU has proven that absolutely any of the teams can make it all the way to the Summoner’s cup.
