Twelve of the best Vainglory teams convened at the Kallang Theater in Singapore but only one team was crowned the new world champion.

The Razer 2017 Vainglory World Championship occurred over four days with an abundance of underdog victories and upsets en route to the grand finals match on December 17, 2017.

An Early Exit

RELATED: The elimination of ROX Armada

Vainglory fans were shocked by the end of the first day of the world championship when the defending champions, ROX Armada, was eliminated. Tribe Gaming took a clean 2-0 victory over ROX in the group stage, knocking out the world champions in the process.

Day 1 ended with the group stage matches unfinished due to early technical delays that would have forced the games past midnight. The teams in the remaining group opted to postpone their group stage matches for the following day.

Broken Predictions

The Vainglory community was asked to vote for their favorites to win the tournament prior to the beginning of the actual event. Team SoloMid were in first place with 25% of the votes. Indonesia’s Elite 8 came in at second with a respectable 18% of votes. Finally, the defending world champions, ROX Armada were third overall with 17 % of fan votes. The fan and analysts prediction accuracy would drop to 0 percent at the end of the day.

Elite 8 were unable to make it through the group stage after falling 0-2 to both Cloud9 and South America’s paiN Gaming. TSM only managed to secure one game win against China’s Hunters before ultimately being eliminated with a 1-3 record.

Another Titan Falls

RELATED: Cloud9 fall short of the world championship

Cloud9 were touted as the best western team heading into the tournament. They were expected to win the world championship after the elimination of ROX Armada but were dropped in a 1-3 semifinals match against fellow-NA representative, Tribe Gaming. C9 was at a 100% win rate before their run ended at the semifinals match.

Tribal Victory

The NA wildcard, Tribe Gaming fought their way to a grand finals slot after receiving the last invitation to the tournament following their defeat at the hands of TSM in the NA Vainglory8 Autumn tournament. NA’s last hope was slated to face off against the East Asian favorites, ACE Gaming.

Both finalists defeated ROX Armada on separate occasions on the road to the grand final at the world championship. A best-of-seven series stood in the way of both teams and the world championship title.

Tribe Gaming continued to defy all expectations as they dominated the South Korean representatives. ACE Gaming were only able to take one game in the entirety of the series before falling to a 1-4 defeat.

5v5 Reveal

The Razer 2017 Vainglory World Championship also provided the fans with the reveal of the much awaited 5v5 map, the Sovereign’s Rise. A full show match was held on the final day of the tournament as a first look at the brand new game mode that will be hitting the apps soon.
