VG 2017 World Championship Day 1 Recap

The Razer 2017 Vainglory World Championship kicked off earlier today at the Kallang Theater, Singapore with 12 of the best Vainglory teams from across the country.

The tournament ran into a technical issues which caused a two-hour delay. The stream suffered from lack of audio and it was also reported that player cams were in need of repairs. Nevertheless, fans eagerly awaited the beginning of the second Vainglory world championship to determine who will be taking the crown for 2017.

Defending the Home Court

All eyes were on ROX Armada‘s return to the world championship stage as they began their world title defense. Expectations were high for the South Korean squad as Day 1 of the tournament began.

ROX’s first opponents of the day were the home court heroes, Impunity. The Singapore based, Impunity, gave ROX a run for their money with a one-sided opening game, handing ROX their first lose.

The 2016 Vainglory world champions bounced back in the 2nd game of the best-of-two series to tie their first match at 1-1.

Wildcard no More

Tribe Gaming set their sights on the top seed of their group as they faced off against ROX Armada in the final series for group C. The wildcard from the NA region dominated ROX in both games of their series to close out the group with a 2-0 record against the defending champions.

ROX fell into a 1-3 standing which resulted in their immediate elimination from the tournament. Vainglory will not have a 2-time world champion this year and it’s mostly thanks to Tribe Gaming.

End of the Road

ROX Gaming are joined by Japan’s DetonatioN Gaming and Indonesia’s Elite 8 as the rest of the competition moves on to Day 2 of the event.

The final matches for group D have been moved to the morning of Day 2 as to not force the players into playing past midnight. The teams with remaining group stage matches were asked if they’d prefer to hold their group stage matches on day 2 so the option was available to the remaining teams.

The Razer 2017 Vainglory World Championship will return on Day 2 with the remaining group stage matches and the first round of the tournament’s playoffs. The quarterfinals are set to begin at 2PM SGT tomorrow so be sure to catch the games live!
