The official theme song for the 2018 League of Legends World Championship has been released on the League of Legends YouTube channel. An animated music video accompanied the reveal of the Worlds 2018 theme entitled RISE featuring recording artists, The Glitch Mob, Mako, and The World Alive. The music video is an animated homage to the struggles of one team in the recent world championship.

Take this chance to watch this amazing video before we dive into just what it stands for. The lead character in the music video is only revealed at the very end of the video once he defeats the final player standing in his way. The RISE video symbolizes Ambition‘s (and Samsung Galaxy’s) journey towards claiming the 2017 League of Legends World Championship crown. In similar fashion to the Worlds 2013 animated teaser video, the players are animated with the weapons of their signature champions. In this video, Ambition wields weapons from three champions that contributed most to their championship run, the last being Jarvan IV’s standard, Ambitions signature champion.

Ambition fought his final greatest battle in the video against SK Telecom T1‘s Faker as Ryze, the demon king’s signature champion. This duel represents more than just their grand finals match in November 2017 in the Bird’s Nest Stadium in Beijing, China. The fight is Ambition’s revenge arc coming into fruition after failing miserably at the hands of a rookie Faker in his debut game in LoL Champions Korea (LCK) Amibtion, who was playing for CJ Entus Blaze, was a frontrunner for the local championship but instead he served as a stepping stone for Faker’s dynasty.

The main character in the music video is not simply the easiest and most recognizable faces of the 2017 Samsung Galaxy roster. Ambition’s moniker directly coincides with the general message of the Worlds 2018 theme, to “RISE” and make yourself known. When it comes to League of Legends, there’s no greater honor the hoisting up the Summoner’s Cup after a lengthy campaign, defeating the world’s best Summoners in the process. There can be no success without great ambition.

A reddit user by the name of Miisc compiled screencaps from the video in his attempt to spot out each of the references all neatly organized in a photo album. The RISE music video is a treasure trove of callbacks towards signature Worlds moments from the past that would make any true LoL esports fan giddy. Watch out for the tag at the end of the video that comes after the fade to the Worlds logo. Riot makes one final nod to Uzi, possibly hinting that this year is Uzi’s time to dominate the world championship.
