The last elimination day for the Worlds 2018 Group Stage wrapped up last night with Invictus Gaming not coming out unscathed after a terrific 3-0 start. The biggest hurdle in the path of China’s second seed was none other than the first seed o EU and League of Legends’ first royal family, Fnatic.

The two teams making it out from Group D may have been determined as early as the second game of the day, but that didn’t stop Fnatic from fighting to their absolute limit to seize the first seed in the group from iG. Fnatic found themselves in a position to disrupt iG’s plans in the sixth game of the day as a win there would mean forcing a tiebreaker match to determine Group D’s standings. Here’s how Fnatic managed to pull off another western upset in the ongoing 2018 League of Legends World Championship.

Fnatic kicked off the high-risk match by blind picking both Aatrox and Urgot, either of these picks can be flexed between top and middle lane but this leaves the EU squad with no AP solo laner especially since Taliyah was banned. They would then lock in a Tristana for Rekkles in the bot lane while picking up the Braum pick for a support. The FNC lineup was completely devoid of any substantial AP damage but that would stop them from forcing a tiebreaker match from IG.

Invictus Gaming would soon suffer their first defeat at the hand of Fnatic as Caps goes absolutely insane on the middle Aatrox pick. Meanwhile, Rekkles is all but left to farm to his heart’s content as he continues to build the extremely dangerous hypercarry Tristana. IG’s JackeyLove on Kai’sa would soon find himself no match for Rekkles Tristana as he gets solo killed time and again through the duration of the match.

Rekkles would tack on a pristine 5/0/5 score at the end of the sub-30 minute game to force the Group D tiebreaker. Fnatic eventually won the tiebreaker to earn their rightful spot as the first seeded team from their group. The EU squads continue to show the rest of the world that they are no longer a region that can be ignored at Worlds. FNC joins G2 Esports as the only remaining EU representatives at the tournament, and their troubles are only starting.

The Quarterfinals stage of Worlds 2018 is set to begin this Saturday with Fnatic facing off against EDward Gaming on the second day. Watch the games live to show your support for the arguably the best EU delegation we have seen at Worlds since the Fnatic & Origen titans of 2015.
