Urgot, League’s number one intimidating crab gun Champion, came out on top of the collective champion pool of the Play-In stage of the 2018 League of Legends World Championship. Urgot currently has a 100% pick/ban rate, a statistic he shares with fellow Top lane Champion, Aatrox. The key difference between the Top lane titans being Urgot’s vastly superior win rate across his 12 played games.
Having the crab tank manning your top lane, looming over the rest of the Rift, is something that mostly goes unnoticed. Urgot remains a strong presence in team fights primarily by virtue of becoming a near unkillable target that serves as a headache for the enemy team. Urgot was put on full display in the final match of the Play-In group stage, and arguably the highest stakes game for the crab tank so far.
It’s the final day of the Play-In group stage and landing first seed is important for any team hoping to push their way through to the main event. G2 Esports found themselves in a precarious position as they tie up with Supermassive after securing a 3-1 score in the group stage. Their fates would hinge on one final tiebreaker match to determine which team will enter the next stage as the 1st seed of their group.
G2’s game plan kicked off right from the pick/ban phase as they masterfully led Supermassive around by flex picking both the Akali and the Urgot. With only 20 seconds left on the pre-game counter, G2 immediately swapped the Urgot off of the Top lane for Wunder, leaving Perkz in the mid lane to rock the crab tank.
The pick worked wonders almost immediately as the opposing Galio mid pick for SUP was leashed hard to the mid lane due to the immense pressure coming from Perkz. Wunder was having an equally great time in the Top lane on the Akali. SUP’s top on Aatrox could do nothing against a strong harass ninja. Perkz was quick to put himself on the board by securing a 2/0/2 KDA 15 minutes into the game as opposed to his opposing laner’s 0/0/0. Having Urgot in mid lane and in the hands of a roam heavy mid laner means that the entire map is under threat of the crab tank and Supermassive had no answer.
Perkz’ Urgot finished the tiebreaker match with an impressive 4/1/9 KDA, almost completely negating Supermassive’s advances. The match finishes with a commanding 16-3 victory for the EU LCS squad, propelling G2 Esports to the first seed position in the coming knockout stage. Look out for Urgot in the next stages of the World Championship. Given his ability to disrupt strategy’s and team fights, just how much damage can he cause in this tournament before the players find an effective shut down for him?
