The Wuhan Sports Center in China will play host to the Worlds 2017 tournament once more for the main event’s group stage. Sixteen teams have traveled to China as they begin their journey towards becoming world champions. The GIGABYTE Marines is the only one SEA representative in the tournament. They carry the hope of an entire region.

The Sole SEA Survivor

GAM took the first seed of the SEA region following their amazing performance at the 2017 Mid-Season Invitational. The world could no longer turn a blind eye towards the strength of the emerging SEA region. The last time a SEA team made it into the worlds was back in 2015. The pressure is on the Marines to bring glory to their home region.

Many analysts consider the GIGABYTE Marines as the team most likely to cause chaos in their group at Worlds. GAM have the challenge of putting up a strong in a group dominated by Longzhu Gaming and Immortals. The SEA reps need to at least finish groups at 2nd place to advance to the playoffs.

GAM’s first match in the group stage was a best-of-one series against the Worlds favorites Fnatic. The 3rd seed from the EU LCS were expected to win this game after their impressive run in the Play-in stage. The Marines kicked things off with an unorthodox draft phase. They fielded in Nocturne for Levi in the Jungle, while Optimus picked up the Kassadin for the mid lane.

What followed is a one-sided meta-breaking game that is the most exciting game at Worlds 2017 so far, even including the Play-in stage. GAM started with a lane swap, a strategy that has not been seen in League since last year. The Marines jungler and top laner partnered up in the jungle to bring Levi’s Nocturne to a very early level 4. They would play around their top Galio and jungler Nocturne around the map causing headaches for Fnatic. The EU squad would have no choice to abandon lanes and rotate towards the jungle top duo in the bot lane, leaving the Marines AD Carry free to siege Fnatic’s turrets.

FNC continued to be led around the map by GAM. They soon found themselves behind three turrets and almost 2k gold after only 14 minutes of play. GAM finished of Fnatic with a clean baron take after breaking FNC’s bottom inhibitor sub-20 minutes. The GIGABYTE Marines were so ahead that Optimus denied his AD Carry a Pentakill towards the end. They were definitely enjoying themselves as the game winded down. GAM’s unorthodox game plan earned them their first win at Worlds at the expense of Fnatic.

You definitely owe it to yourself to watch this amazing game by the GIGABYTE Marines. They definitely changed the minds of many analysts about their chances of making it out of the group stage. Their AD Carry Noway assured their fans in a post-game interview that they still have more surprises in store for their opponents at Worlds 2017. Just how far can this SEA squad make it on the biggest stage of League of Legends?
